High Lodge, between Thetford and Brandon, is the visitor hub for Thetford Forest, offering recreational facilities for 500 000 visitors annually. The Heritage Trail has a smooth surface which will be perfect for the new transporter bike and the fact that it’s hireable from Bike Art on site is just fantastic I can’t wait to see the transporter bike in action and people enjoying High Lodge’s multi-user trails. Megan Bradsworth, Visitor Services Manager at High Lodge, has commented: I’m delighted that funding from the Local Connections Fund has been secured and due to the generosity and commitment of FOTF we will be able to offer the freedom of the forest to so many more visitors. Booking is essential by telephoning 01842 810090. The transporter bike can be hired from Bike Art at High Lodge, in an arrangement with Friends of Thetford Forest. It’s ideal for users who have a complex seating system in their own wheelchair that would normally make transferring impossible or have mobility problems making transferring difficult. The platform at the front of the bike is operated to move down and the wheelchair itself is reversed onto the platform and is strapped and clamped into place and then the platform is moved gently up to above the ground level. This transporter bike will enable wheelchair users to remain in their own chair while another person powers the actual bike.

    Friends of Thetford Forest applied for funding for a wheelchair transporter bike which would enable wheelchair users to be with others cycling at High Lodge, instead of being excluded. The Local Connections Fund, supported by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and the National Lottery Community Fund, was set up to bring people and communities together and reduce isolation and loneliness.
